Project Concept

cloudNein is a privacy-first financial AI assistant for CFOs that runs FunctionGemma on-device for instant answers to sensitive financial queries. When cloud reasoning is needed, we use a novel process for anonymizing all entities (vendors, clients, PII) before sending to Gemini, then de-anonymizing the response locally so real names never leave the device. Name inspired by all team members have a ‘German connection’, one in town from Berlin, another German teammate who is former Google and Waymo, and one American who used to work and live there.

Ian built an initial proof-of-concept as a React Native mobile app using cactus-react-native (Cactus Compute) and google/generative-ai (Gemini Flash). Implemented on-device FunctionGemma tool calling, PII detection, reversible anonymization, and a local SQLite financial data layer to validate the hybrid architecture on mobile.

Christoph focused on the hybrid routing algorithm — designing the confidence-based logic that determines when to keep inference on-device via FunctionGemma (Cactus Compute) versus escalating to Gemini cloud (Google DeepMind). Built the sensitivity-aware routing pipeline and the fallback chain between local, encrypted server farm, and redacted cloud paths.
I am software engineer with experience in electronic design automation, web search infrastructure, large scale systems, autonomous vehicles and robotics. I studied at the Research Institute for Discrete Mathematics at the University of Bonn, from which I received a PhD in Mathematics.
